With Valheim's 1.0 release, players stepping into the long-awaited Deep North biome encounter not only freezing cold but also region-specific crafting systems. One of the most confusing elements of these systems is the Intricate Key required to open the massive locked doors. These doors, which cannot be opened with ordinary methods, push players into exploration, combat, and an extended crafting chain. Moreover, those aiming to complete the process in the Deep North may not settle for just a single key; at least three Intricate Keys might be needed. For this reason, the purpose of this guide is not to tell you where to find the key, but rather to explain in a simplified, step-by-step manner which materials to gather and process in what order.
This process, which at first glance may seem overly complicated for a single key, actually consists of three major interconnected stages. First, you explore the underground tunnels hidden in the snowy villages of Deep North to gather raw materials. Then, you set up crafting structures such as the Frost Foundry and Frigid Kiln to process these materials. The hardest part is facing the massive enemies known as Gammeltrolls to obtain bloodgold, a substance used in the key's casting. Skipping any of these stages could leave you helpless in front of the door, even if you have the best gear.
What Does the Intricate Key Do and Why Do You Need More Than One?
The Intricate Key is a craftable key required to open the special locked doors in the Deep North. These doors appear as progression checkpoints in the region, and you cannot move to the areas behind them without using the key on the door. According to information from the guide, finding only one key is not enough; a player intending to complete the process will need at least three separate Intricate Keys. The most important reason for this is that the molds used in crafting the key are single-use. In other words, after you find a mold and craft a key, you cannot craft a second key with the same mold. This expands your exploration route and material-gathering plan, requiring you to visit the region at least two or three times.
Although what lies behind the doors may change the exploration experience from player to player, Deep North's locking system is deliberately designed as a progression barrier. Since you must gather molds, Frostcore, and bloodgold all at the same time, learning the process and finishing it in a single run is quite difficult. Therefore, while crafting the key, you should pay attention not only to the material list, but also to the order in which you proceed. To make things easier, it's most logical to first examine how to explore, then the crafting infrastructure, and finally the challenging hunting section.

Explore the Villages and Hidden Tunnels
The first step in crafting the Intricate Key is not to start at a crafting bench, but to investigate the snowy villages of the Deep North. While exploring the map, you will come across small, snow-covered villages, and hidden inside them are the molds used for the key along with blue ice chunks called Frostcore. These materials are not just sitting out on the village streets, however; you need to find the largest building in the village to reach them. When you enter this structure, which usually stands out as a multi-story building, you'll see a large hole in the floor. Jumping down through that hole leads you to the underground tunnels.
The tunnels, as you might expect, are far from empty. Be ready to fight the enemies waiting for you inside; this area acts more like a dungeon that requires frequent use of your weapons than a peaceful cave exploration. As you move through the tunnels, keep your eyes on both the ceiling and the floor: Frostcores are usually found up above in the form of glowing blue ice chunks. The molds, meanwhile, lie as flat, black rectangles with various shapes etched into them. Not every mold is out in the open, though; some need to be uncovered by breaking piles of wooden debris. For this reason, checking every corner and every destructible object in the tunnel is critical if you don't want to miss any Intricate Key molds.

Crafting Infrastructure: Frost Foundry and Frigid Kiln
As soon as you touch your first Frostcore while progressing through the tunnels, you learn a vital crafting recipe: the Frost Foundry. This structure is considered the heart of the Intricate Key crafting process, and building it requires a specific amount of materials. To construct the Frost Foundry, you need 10 Frostcore, 15 iron, and 20 stone. Collecting these quantities can take some time, especially when you first arrive in the Deep North, so it is wiser not to return to your base until you've completed your tunnel explorations, or at least to make sure you've gathered enough Frostcore.
Alongside the Frost Foundry, you'll also need to build a Frigid Kiln. This furnace allows you to melt ice to produce liquid frost, an essential part of casting the key. The Frigid Kiln recipe unlocks once you collect ice. So how do you get ice? While exploring the Deep North, if you feel a slippery surface beneath your feet, you're likely standing on ice. At this point, you can mine ice chunks with a black metal pickaxe. Building the Frigid Kiln requires 10 Frostcore, 20 stone, and 5 ice. Furthermore, since the kiln also needs ice as fuel to operate, gathering plenty of ice in several stacks will prevent you from getting stuck halfway through the process.

The Challenging Part: Gammeltroll and Bloodgold Production
The most critical and arduous material used in casting the Intricate Key is bloodgold. This substance is obtained by defeating the giant creatures known as Gammeltrolls that roam the Deep North, then smashing their petrified bodies. If you haven't encountered a Gammeltroll yet, don't worry; sooner or later, you'll come across these massive enemies while exploring the region. However, defeating them with ordinary weapons isn't enough; you need to break apart the remaining petrified remains using a special method. To do so, you first need to build a structure called the Ember Monument at your base. This structure is a reward dropped by Fader, the boss of the Ashlands region, and it allows you to collect embers regularly.
After gathering embers, you'll need to hunt seals in the Deep North and collect their pelts. Combine these pelts with embers to craft ember charges. You can then use these ember charges to shatter the petrified bodies left behind when you defeat a Gammeltroll. From the shattered remains, you collect petrified tissue, which you then melt in a blast furnace to turn it into bloodgold. This entire sequence demands considerable effort in exploration, boss preparation, and resource gathering. If you haven't defeated Fader or haven't produced enough ember charges, hunting Gammeltrolls can be extremely taxing, so it's best to complete this preparation before heading into the Deep North.
Final Step: Crafting and Using the Intricate Key
By now, you have all the pieces required to craft the key. From this point on, it's simply a matter of following the material list in order. First, go to the black forge workbench at your base. There, you craft a Cast: Intricate Key using 5 bloodgold and 1 Mould: Intricate Key. Keep in mind that the mold is single-use: every time you repeat this step, you consume a new mold. After placing your prepared mold into the Frost Foundry, you also need to add the liquid frost you produced from ice in the Frigid Kiln to the Frost Foundry. Once the one-minute crafting process is complete, you can collect the finished Intricate Key. Use this key directly on the locked doors in the Deep North to continue your progress.
Here is a summary of the crafting steps:
- Find the largest building in Deep North villages and descend through the hole inside it to reach the underground tunnels.
- Collect Frostcore from the tunnels and break wooden debris to find Mould: Intricate Key molds.
- Set up the Frost Foundry and Frigid Kiln at your base; gather plenty of ice to fuel the kiln.
- Build the Ember Monument, gather seal pelts, and create ember charges.
- Defeat Gammeltrolls and shatter their petrified bodies with ember charges to obtain petrified tissue.
- Melt the tissue in a blast furnace to turn it into bloodgold.
- At the black forge, create a Cast: Intricate Key with 5 bloodgold and one Intricate Key mold.
- Place the mold into the Frost Foundry, add the liquid frost, and wait for the key to finish crafting.
Things to Keep in Mind When Preparing for the Deep North
Crafting the Intricate Key is one of the most extreme examples of Valheim's overall exploration and crafting loop. Seeing that even a single key requires Frostcore, a mold, ice, bloodgold, and multiple special structures can feel overwhelming at first. However, there are certain practical tips that make the job easier. For example, collecting as many molds as possible while exploring the tunnels prevents you from having to retrace the same route later. Likewise, when collecting ice, you need to account not just for the minimum amount needed to build the kiln, but also for the fuel required to run it. These small details will save you from making unnecessary trips back to the Deep North during key crafting.
Finally, before heading out on a Gammeltroll hunt, make sure your preparations include the Ember Monument, a sufficient supply of ember charges, and strong armor. These giant creatures can hit brutally hard, and if you die, you might have to undertake a dangerous journey to reclaim some of the valuable materials you've gathered. Also remember that after crafting your first key, you'll need to go on the same mold hunt again for the second and third keys. As you clear enemies from the tunnels, you'll map the region more effectively, learn where the molds are hidden, and complete the process much faster. No matter how bitter the cold of the Deep North may be, with the right preparation you can leave all those locked doors behind you.
