Every VALORANT match is played by teams of five, and agents are divided into four roles: Duelist, Initiator, Controller and Sentinel. A role tells you what an agent does for the team, so a new player's first question should be "which role should I play?" rather than "which agent should I pick?" In this guide we sorted the 29 agents on Riot Games' agent list by role and summarized each role's job in plain language.
29 Agents, Four Roles
Riot's official agent page lists 29 agents, and each belongs to one of these roles:
- Duelist (8): Iso, Jett, Neon, Phoenix, Raze, Reyna, Waylay, Yoru
- Initiator (7): Breach, Fade, Gekko, KAY/O, Skye, Sova, Tejo
- Controller (7): Astra, Brimstone, Clove, Harbor, Miks, Omen, Viper
- Sentinel (7): Chamber, Cypher, Deadlock, Killjoy, Sage, Veto, Vyse
This list will grow as new agents are added; the role is also shown by the icon on an agent in the in-game selection screen.
Duelist: The Space Makers
Duelists start the fight, make first contact and open up space for their team. They have movement and self-sufficiency abilities that help them win duels on their own. Agents like Jett and Reyna are a natural starting point for aim-focused players. The catch is that entering first alone is risky: a Duelist who rushes ahead without teammates' support usually dies, and the round is often lost with them.
Initiator: The Information Gatherers
Initiators scout enemy positions, blind or stun opponents and so make it easier for the team to take a site. Sova and Fade offer tools for gathering information, while Breach and KAY/O bring stuns and ability suppression. The role suits players who like a "information first, then entry" structure, and it pairs best with a Duelist.
Controller: The Sightline Shapers
Controllers cut the enemy's sightlines with smokes so the team can enter or defend a site safely. Omen, Brimstone, Viper, Astra, Harbor, Clove and Miks belong to this role. The role can look hard at first because smokes need good timing and map knowledge, but a good Controller sets the tempo of the round.
Sentinel: The Site Lockers
Sentinels hold an area with traps, turrets and lockdown abilities and protect the team against flanks. Cypher and Killjoy are known for traps and turrets, while Sage stands out for healing and reviving a teammate. Agents who can hold a site alone on defense let the rest of the team stack the other one.
How to Choose Your First Role
There is no single right answer, but there is a practical path: if you enjoy aiming, start with a Duelist; if you like giving information and helping the team, try an Initiator or a Sentinel; if you like planning, look at the Controllers. Team balance matters in ranked games, so being comfortable in at least two roles is a big advantage. Checking your team's roles before locking in an agent is the easiest improvement you can make in your first five minutes.
