League of Legends Patch and Meta Guide: 26.16, Locke and the Pandemonium Season

League of Legends in 2026: Current Patch, Meta and Season Structure

League of Legends is having a busy year on both the balance and the systems side. Seasons have got shorter, only a single new champion arrived all year, and several lasting changes landed that affect the ranked experience directly. This guide gathers the current patch, where the meta is heading and the new systems in one place.

Current Patch: 26.16 and the Direction of the Meta

With patch 26.16 live in mid-August 2026, Riot is targeting a few overperforming trends. Mages have become a prominent class in the bot lane in both pro and regular play, so Riot is working to equalise power between mages and marksmen: the goal is not to make mages unplayable but to stop them dominating.

The same patch also reworks AD fighter itemisation and jungle pets. The aim there is to pull the jungle out of the grip of Sundered Sky users and open the meta up to AP and tank junglers as well.

On the previous patch, the best-performing champions with a pick rate of at least 1% were:

  • Kog'Maw — 55.5%
  • Kayle — 55.4%
  • Wukong — 54.2%
  • Amumu — 53.9%
  • Rammus — 53.7%

Locke: The Only New Champion of 2026

Locke, the Ashen Exorcist, arrived in June with patch 26.13 as the only new champion of the year. He is a high-burst AP assassin played in the mid lane, built around rituals and chained executions with a demonic identity. Players first caught a glimpse of him during the opening act of the Pandemonium season, through Vayne's comic.

The early data is less flattering: one tracker lists him at a 45.3% win rate with a 5.3% pick rate, sitting in the bottom tier. Some confusion also came from early coverage calling him "Roke"; his official in-game name is Locke.

The Pandemonium Season and Balance Changes

The Pandemonium season runs for only six patches — around 12 weeks — instead of the usual eight. Its first act opened on 29 April 2026 with patch 26.09. The year's first season, "For Demacia", brought no new champion and instead delivered the long-awaited Shyvana rework.

  • 26.11: A holistic pass at the enchanter-heavy support meta. Tank runes and tank support items were buffed, enchanter items were trimmed and Imperial Mandate was reworked.
  • 26.12: Opening Season 2 Act 2, Aatrox, Gwen, Hwei, Jax, Sylas, Syndra, Tristana and Yuumi were buffed while Lee Sin, Nocturne, Orianna, Ryze, Varus and AP Xin Zhao were nerfed. The same patch also reworked the Teleport shield.

New Systems on the Ranked Side

  • Autofill protection: With a Mastery Grade of C or above you lose no LP on a loss and earn double LP on a win.
  • Improved Mastery system: Significantly better at detecting a player's actual contribution to the game.
  • The Ranked 5s queue has returned.
  • ARAM: Mayhem received a broad wave of changes.
